SUSTAINABILITY
At Biogenic Minerals , we place emphasis on sustainability. We want to do our part in contributing to solving the global health and sustainability challenges. We do this by offering consumers a sustainable source of calcium, while at the same time reducing waste and promoting a sustainable fishery.
SUSTAINABLE SOURCE
Currently, the vast majority of calcium used in industry is extracted by quarrying limestone. This process is resource, water, and energy-intensive and destroys the natural landscape and soil. ​ However, by using quahog shells or lithothamnion algae as a calcium source. A lot of water, energy, and resources are saved.
REDUCED WASTE
Currently, the meat of the quahog clam is the only part of the ocean quahog that is used, and the shells considered waste. By using the shells as a source of calcium, every part of the quahog is used resulting in less waste.
SOLAR IMPULSE FOUNDATION
In 2021 Biogenic Minerals (then Icecal) got accepted into the Solar Impulse Foundation and received the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label.

The Solar Impulse Foundation is an environmental non-profit organization founded in 2003 by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.
It was announced in 2016 that the foundation would identify 1000 solutions to receive the Efficient Solutions Label. To qualify for the label, solutions must be related to one of five sustainable development goals from the United Nations: water, clean energy, industry, cities, and responsible consumption and production.
Since 2018, the foundation has evaluated and selected a broad range of more than 1000 innovations designed to combat climate change in a financially profitable way. All labelled solutions underwent a rigorous evaluation by a team of more than 400 independent industry experts before obtaining the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all." The Sustainable Development Goals were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by 2030.
We feel that focusing on the areas where we can have the most influence will help us achieve the global goals most effectively. As a result, we are dedicated to assisting in the achievement of the following goals.
